Corporal Ernest Cruse of Exmouth was in a truck which was hit by a mortar bomb and isolated from the remainder of the unit. Three men with him were killed by small arms fire from encircling Chinese troops. He ordered the remainder clear of the truck and held off a charge. Then he extricated his six Marines and one American from an ambush and led them through five miles of enemy territory to Hagaru-ri. Corporal Ernest Cruse, 41 Independent Commando Royal Marines, aged 23, was wounded on 29 November 1950 in the Korean War during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished service during this operation
