Lloyd who served with the Royal Marines from 1890 to his death in 1900 the Royal Marines Museum in Eastney, Hampshire holds two journals and personal correspondence. The author combines these different sources to detail a rare insight into how aspects of service affected the human and professional development of this young man including his state of mind within the wider context of the environment he lived in. Training at Portsmouth and life stationed in Bermuda, China, are touched upon and particular details of the Boxer Wars in China are given. The author concludes Captain Lloyd was not a happy man
